Portrait of Vigneron by Nicolas Bria

Cyril Marès - Mas des Bressades - Coasts of Nimes

On voit Cyril Marès, vigneron du Mas des Bressades, accoudé au comptoir de dégustation. Des bouteilles sont ouvertes sur le comptoir. dans le fond, un portrait de Roger Marès, son père.
Cyril Marès is the author of the book.

Cyril Marès was devoted to agronomy, it was decided, it was chosen, it was like this.

The Marès family's history, along with the wine, dates back over 200 years, whether in Algeria, in the upper Medoc, or in the Languedoc.

Roger Marès, his father, planted his vineyards in Manduel (Gard) in the 1960s.

Cyrilès Marès, on the other hand, wanted to be an agronomist, and from his father he had received the love of the land, good things... certainly wine as well, but not enough not to want to become an agronomist.

In the summer of 1992, the same fate befell the grape harvest.

The school year approaching, and summer in the south being favorable for many things, Roger hires his son to the cellar... De force? Certainly not by threat, but slightly constrained, on the guess... Cyril Marès got acquainted with the internal kitchen, the back-boutique, where the grapes will be gone.

An art that perfectly matches his ambition of precision.

In the summer, he will not be an agronomist... He nevertheless pursues his studies, but also those in viticulture, wine technology and also several trips to train in wine.Chile, USA, but also at Château Margaux... In 1996, he returned to the estate and worked to arrange his kitchen. He modernized the tea and extended the vineyard, from 15 to 45 hectares in a span of 20 years.

A vineyard and a terroir that he admired, and of which he discovered immense wealth.

On the occasion of a meeting with Georges Truc, the famous Oenogéologue, he was himself moved by this terroir, made of old alluvions and glaciers from the Rhône.

To be fair, everything was put together to make good wine.

But it was in the cellar and with his oak barrels that Cyril peaufined and fabricated his secrets, but above all his demands.

In each word there is a state of mind and one must give his maximum.

If quality cannot be at the meeting, he prefers not to bottle some of the buckets or at least, in limited quantities. fortunately for him, and for us, this does not happen often, but the approach is welcome.

For this article, I have spent just under two hours with him, because at the time of writing these lines, I feel that he was too short to apprehend Cyril Marès. A calm, but not pressured, rather tender, but sharp look when he talks about his profession. Smiling, but serious when he talks about his wines. He talks about himself gladly, but I would not know more...

Cyril Marès produces wines, not only for the enjoyment of the public, but also to reward the most patient.

Vieux millésime du Mas des Bressades de 1992

The price of wine is anecdotal to me... the price you actually pay is the price of owning, waiting and appreciating the barrels that reveal their full potential, sometimes after 10 years.

Maybe, there, my answer is...

In any case, it was a meeting I expected, the wines of the Mas des Bressades are one of the reasons why I am passionate about wine, because the tasting already begins with the idea of opening one of its bottles.

Cyril Marès, I am pleased to be able to discover a 100% Syrah word from 1992, the famous year of its first millennium.

Ben, that was good...

The wines.

Les Bressades comes from the Provençal patois meaning Berser, in reference to the famous Mistral.

Le Domaine began its bio conversion in 2017 and the first wine bio will be launched in the 2020s.

It produces wine in 3 colors, under the appellation Coasts de Nîmes, but also in Igp du Gard.

Cyril Marès's desire is to be able to offer affordable wines, which is more than that for me, because I find the price/quality ratio excellent.

Each has its own personality, its own identity, and the farms are worked, whether in barricades of different sizes or sometimes in amphores (Excellence Blanc), the yields are mastered and they all have a rather remarkable guarding potential.

The white ones are 8 euros and the red ones are 12 euros.

Only the big coupe Quintessence is 19 euros.

For a wine with a yield of 20hl per hectare, a year's worth of barrel-fed produce and truly ready to drink between 3 and 5 years, personally... I find this, more than reasonable, not to mention the final yield that is just magical...

My father's vineyards - Igp Pays duGard - 2018

That one, that's my heartbeat!

Cuvée du mas des bressades,

It is made up of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Syrah.

Le Cabernet was planted in the 1970s by Roger Marès and is the first wine in the region.

It is raised 1 an in barrel.

The ambiance is as follows:

Le nez is complex, powerful and structured, on the chassis, cherry and green pepper (typical of cabernet).

In the mouth, the matter is well-tempered. It is round, pleasantly deep, the aroma is consistent and the tannins are in numbers, but fine... There is a slight grain. A beautiful contrast between power/structure and elegance.

The final is persistent on the fruits, structured and generous.

It's deep, complex and slow to taste.

It is primarily a wine of the guard, so either you'll be making it at least an hour early, or you'll forget it for another year or two.

Price: 12 euros at the online shop .

I hope I made you want to explore this area.

And as this is the first article of the year 2021 and well... I wish you a happy new year!

Happy Mother's Day selection by LCBO
Rosé tradition 2018, noted 91/100.

"One of the darker, more traditional-styled rosés from the region (where the trend has been toward lighter and lighter-hued wines), Mas des Bressades' 2017 Costieres de Nimes Rose Cuvée Tradition is a blend of 50% Grenache, 30% Syrah and 20% Cinsault. It remains a standard-bearer for the region, showing plenty of texture and complexity. Subtle floral and dried spice notes accent berry fruit, it's medium-bodied and silky, finishing long, refreshing and stony. And the price remains a bargain. What more could you want?
